2012 Spring Flag Football Registration Now In Session!

WANTED!

Flag Football Players

We are looking for boys and girls aged 8-14 who would like to learn and play the game of Flag Football.

We play in two divisions:

Pee-Wee (age 8-11...cannot turn 12 in 2012)

Jr. Bantam (age 12-14...cannot turn 15 in 2012).

Practices: We begin practicing on Tuesday, March 6th. We practice on Tueday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Games: We begin playing games on Saturday, March 10th. We play all of our games on Saturdays except for Sunday, March 18th.

Our last weekend of play is the MIGHTY BOWL which will be played Saturday, April 21st

Pee-Wee Games are played from 10:00 AM to 1130 AM.

Jr. Bantam Games run from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM

Football Season Is Just Around The Corner!

Registration and Equipment Issue for players aged 9-13 will be taking place each Thursday night in August/September 2011. The location for registration is The Dawghouse Football Facility located at the top of the John Barsby High School Student Parking Lot off of Bruce Avenue.

There are two age groups in our league:

Pee-Wee- Age 9, 10 and 11 yrs. (cannot turn 12 in 2011)

Jr. Bantam- Age 12 and 13 yrs. (cannot turn 14 in 2011)

The registration fee is: $125.00 and we supply the following:

1) A complete set of protective equipment
2) Practice Jersey
3) Game Jersey
4) Game Socks

You supply:

1) Your footwear
2) A great Attitude

League

We will be fielding two teams at each level from our organization and will be playing teams from Ladysmith, Parksville and Campbell River. Games we host and games versus Ladysmith will be played on Saturdays. Away games vs Parksville (1) and Campbell River (1) will be played on Sundays.

Practices

All Pee-Wee practices will take place on the main field at John Barsby HS. When formal practices begin in mid-to late August, we will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 PM. Pee-Wee games are generally played at 11 AM on Saturdays.

Jr. Bantam Practices will be conducted at two sites. There will be a team that practices at the Nanaimo District HS Field Mondays and Wednesdays 6-7:30 PM and a team that practices at the John Barsby HS Field Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7:30 PM. Jr. Bantam games are generally played at 1 PM on Saturdays.

Youth Football is a whole lot of fun!

Our coaching staffs have been together for eight plus years and the program is the work of many hands! We place a high premium on safety, proper fundamentals and player development. We are extremely proud of the fact that many of our young people have progressed to play very successfully at the High School level and beyond to the BCFC and collegiate ranks. It all begins at Pee-Wee and Jr. Bantam!

Who Can Play?

We have two divisions of play for all interested boys and girls:

Jr. Bantam Mighty Bowl: Game 1 is 1:00 PM-2:15 PM - Game 2 is 2:30 PM-3:45 PM

Registration for Spring Flag Football is now taking place!

New players need only attend our Tuesday or Thursday Practices (John Barsby HS Field) to register. Players need to show up at 6 PM with their parent/guardian and ask for Coach Larry Cooper. Players can register on Saturday Game Days beginning at 10 AM.

Players need only to supply cleates, sweats and a great attitude. All other uniforms and protective equipment are supplied by SSMFA.

Coaching provided by members of the John Barsby Bulldogs 2010 BC High School Football Champions and members of the Nanaimo District HS Islanders, BC Seimi-Finalists.

Of Note: Flag Football is Fun, Safe and provides an excellent foundational skill set for young people that is very applicable to their tackle-football days ahead! The majority of the local high school players began their careers in this leage!

Fall Registration and Practices Now!

FALL REGISTRATION AND GEAR-UP!

Gear-Up and Registration will take place on Sunday August 8th 12 PM-3 PM at the Dawghouse Football Facility located at the top of the John Barsby HS Student Parking Lot (Bruce Ave.).

There will be a second registration day on Sunday, August 15th 8 AM-11 AM at the same location.

We have two age categories of play:

Pee-Wee: Ages 9, 10 and 11 (cannot turn 12 before December 31, 2010)

Junior Bantam: Ages 12 and 13 (cannot turn 14 before December 31, 2010)

-Players who registered this past spring need only to pick-up their gear-

NEW PLAYERS: The cost of registration is $125.00 and SSMFA supplies your practice jersey, game uniform, socks and a complete set of protective equipment.

Players supply their own footwear and a great attitude! **we have a used shoe bank 1st come-first serve**

It is important that a parent/guardian accompanies their child to registration.

OPENING PRACTICES

SSMFA features two Pee-Wee Teams and two Jr. Bantam Teams. We practice at two locations.

Nanaimo District HS Location

Fairview Pee-Wee: Outlaws Practice Mondays and Wednesdays 6-7 PM @ Nanaimo District HS Field beginning Monday, August 9th.

Fairview Jr. Bantam: Cowboys Practice Mondays and Wednesdays 6-8 PM @ Nanaimo District HS Field beginning Monday, August 9th.

**Please note: Players may register on practice nights at the NDSS Football portable located behind the school as well. It is helpful to arrive at 5:30 PM to register.

OPENING SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT CAMP

There will be an FREE (for all SSMFA players) Skills and Development Camp on Sunday, August 15th on the John Barsby HS Field. This camp will feature a morning practice (10 AM- 12 PM) and an afternoon practice (12:45 PM-2:45 PM). Campers should pack a lunch and bring their own water bottle.

Non SSMFA players may also attend the camp. The cost for this group is $20.00 per-player and each camper should bring a black practice shirt (defense) or a white practice shirt (offense) along with their lunch and water bottle.

Our League:

We play in an Central Island Football League.

Pee-Wee League: Ladysmith Steelers, Harewood Dawgs, Fairview Outlaws, Oceanside (Parksville) Vikings, Alberni Sea Lions and the Campbell River Fighting Eagles.

Jr. Bantam League: Harewood Dawgs, Fairview Cowboys, Oceanside Titans, Campbell River Fighting Eagles.

Pee-Wee Games will begin Sunday, September 5th with a round-robin Jamboree in Parksville with league play beginning on the weekend of Sept. 11/12.

Jr. Bantam league games will begin the weekend of Sept. 11/12th.

Opening Day A Big Hit!

The first gameday of the spring season was a huge hit on Saturday! It was terrific to see all the players, coaches and parents out doing their thing in the sunshine!! Ladysmith's Pee-Wee squad sure looks like has come a country mile over the course of a year and Oceanside's Jr. Bantam squad is surely a welcome addition to JB play!

What really stood out on the field was how much sound, quality, fundamental football was being played. There is a very veteren feel to the whole group and the brand new players totally fit in.

We are certainly still looking for more players and there is lots of room on the rosters at both levels (Pee-Wee age 9, 10 and Jr. Bantam age 11,12, 13). Players interested in joining need only to come by one of our Tuesday /Thursday 6-7 PM practices out on the JB HS field know as the Canem Cage and approach Coach Cooper. We'd love to have you out!

Next Saturday's games kick off at 10 AM for the Pee-Wee tilts and 11:30 AM for the Jr. Bantam tilts!

2010 FOOTBALL REGISTRATION IS HERE!

TACKLE FOOTBALL PLAYERS

The South-Side Minor Football Association in partnership with the John Barsby and NDSS Football Programs is now holding registration for the 2010 Tackle Football Year! We are going to feature 9-Man Tackle Ball this Spring!!

Who can play: Boys and Girls currently in grades 4/5 (Pee-Wee Division 9, 10, 11yrs. cannot turn 12 in 2010) and 6/7 (Junior Bantam Division-12/13yrs..cannot turn 14 in 2010).
Practice Times: Practices will begin Tuesday March 16th and will run Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 PM to 7 PM until Thursday, April 22nd. All practices and games will be at John Barsby Field.
Games: Games will be played on Saturday Mornings beginning Saturday, March 20th. Pee-Wee Games will be from 10 AM to 11 AM and Junior Bantam games will be from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM. The Last Game will be Saturday, April 24th
Coaching: Coaching will be provided by quality, certified SSMFA, John Barsby and Nanaimo District HS Coaches with assistance from selected Varsity players from each program.
Equipment: All protective equipment, practice and game uniforms will be provided by SSMFA. Players are responsible for their own footwear. We do have some used cleats that can be obtained supplies allowing.
Registration: Registration and Equipment Issue will take place at “The Dawghouse” Football Facility located at the top of the John Barsby Student Parking Lot off of Bruce Avenue. Registration Dates: Sunday February 21st 1-3 PM, Sunday, February 28th 1-3 PM and Sunday, March 7th 1-3 PM.
Fee: There is a non-refundable $125.00 registration fee. This fee covers your equipment rental. It also covers your spring football season and your Fall Football Season (mid-August to mid-November)!!! Two seasons for the price of one!! Please pay with cash or a certified cheque made out to South-Side Minor Football Association.

Spring Football: All players who register will be divided up equally on to four teams at each level of play. We will be playing nine-man tackle football in Spring. This is a fast, fun and totally developmental game.
Fall Football: The players from the John Barsby catchment area will form a Pee-Wee and a Jr. Bantam team and will practice and play out of the John Barsby field/facility. The players from the Nanaimo District catchment area will form a Pee-Wee and a Jr. Bantam team and will practice and play out of the NDSS field and facility. Players from beyond either school’s catchment will be allotted according to the roster space at either location.

Harewood Burger Night Sat. Oct. 3rd

Harewood Squads Host Burger and Beverage Night Sat. October 3rd

The parents and coaches of the teams playing off of the Harewood Field location in cooperation with the John Barsby Football program will be conducting their Burger Night and Silent Auction at the Harewood Arms Pub this Saturday, October 3rd 6-9 PM.

Tickets can be purchased from Coach Cooper before or after Tuesday/Thursday Practices and are $15.00 per-ticket. Each ticket holder receives a burger, fries and a beverage with half of the ticket proceeds going towards the program. The evening's fundraising will go directly towards the costs associated with putting players on the field in top quality protective equipment as well as to cover the costs of field lining, referees etc.

Please support your young people by being in attendance.

PEE-WEE JAMBOREE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH

"The Great Pee-Wee Dust-Up Of 09!!"

Hold on to your hats folks, the Pee-Wees are set to play some ball this Sunday!!

We will be conducting a round-robin jamboree style event with shortened games played on a half-field. The Jamboree is intended to familiarize the young players with the game and to run their offensive and defensive schemes against live competition. Regular Season Games will begin next weekend (see "League Schedule and Information Link" At Right).

The Great Pee Wee Dust-Up of 09 is set for Sunday, September 6th at the NDSS playing fields.

Each team will get three "games" of twenty minutes each. There will be a ten minute break between each "game".
The Jamboree will start at 10:00am and finish at 12:30pm.
Teams will start on the 40 yard line and work toward the endzone.
If something negative happens to the offense (fumble, interception, turnover on downs) the opposing team will start on the 30 yard line and work towards the endzone.
If the offense chooses to punt, the other team will start with the ball on the 40 yard line.

Concession: We will have a concession available for the Jamboree. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of uniforms, protective equipment and to the costs of running a football program. Please support our concession.

Changeroom/Bathroom Facilities: Will be available.

Water: Please ensure your child brings his/her water bottle to the jamboree.

Weather: We practice and play football in any kind of weather.

Cheering/Spectator Conduct: Cheer as loudly as you like for your team but never against the other team. As adults, we are all role models for the youth on the field. Never belittle or berate game officials.

How You Can Help:

Please volunteer to run the Down Box/Chain Set. It is an essential duty and easy to do.

When the Jamboree is over, please give us a helping hand with the storage of the sideline markers, goal-post pads, down-box/chains etc. Every little bit is a terrific help!!

Please Do Not Stand Behind Your Child's Bench Area: Though well meaning, parents who do this are a distraction from the game and create sideline management issues. The players and coaches need their space during games. Please respect this.

Safety: It is very important to make sure you stand/sit at least 5 yards from the sidleines. Small children should be monitored at all times.
